Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Traditional Chinese medicine, also known as TCM (simplified Chinese: 中医; traditional Chinese: 中醫), includes a range of traditional medical practices originating in China. Although well accepted in the mainstream of medical care throughout East Asia, it is considered an alternative medical system in much of the western world.

Australa had the first TCM registration, the Chinese Medicine Registration Board of Victoria. CMRB was formed in December 2000 and continues from 1 July 2007 under the Health Professions Registration Act 2005 (the Act).  The Australian Health Workforce Ministerial Council has reached a national consensus and decided that, from 1 July 2012, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioners, Chinese medicine practitioners and medical radiation practitioners will be regulated under the new National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.

TCM practices include such treatments as herbal medicine (中药), acupuncture, dietary therapy, and both Tuina (Remedial) and Shiatsu massage. Qigong and Taijiquan are also closely associated with TCM.

TCM theory originated thousands of years ago through meticulous observation of nature, the cosmos, and the human body. Major theories include those of Yin-yang, the Five Eliments, the human body Channel.Meridian system, Zang Fu organ theory, six confirmations, four layers, etc.
